Washington, DC is a crossroads of cultures, home to over 175 embassies, each sharing unique traditions and histories. As Destination DC, we invited our guests to explore one corner of this rich global tapestry—my homeland, Türkiye.
On November 14, as Destination DC, we proudly hosted a meaningful Turkish Cultural Night at Meze Restaurant. The event showcased Washington, DC’s rich cultural diversity and its potential as a premier destination for hosting events and meetings. With strong participation from companies, non-profit organizations, third-party companies, and event planners, the evening provided an excellent opportunity to highlight DC’s cultural side to those who have organized events here or are considering it in the future. By sharing Türkiye’s rich cultural heritage, we aimed to demonstrate DC’s ability to bring diverse traditions together seamlessly.
Purpose and Inspiration
In my opening remarks, I welcomed our guests with these words:
“In Türkiye, hospitality is a deeply valued tradition. As our poet Yunus Emre once said, ‘Let us love, let us be loved.’ In our culture, hearts and doors are always open. The poet Rumi invites everyone with his timeless words, ‘Come, come, whoever you are.’ It is this spirit of warmth and inclusivity that we hope you feel here tonight.”
This event was more than a celebration of Turkish culture; it was a gathering to celebrate the beauty of connection and unity among cultures. We also reflected on the words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Türkiye’s founder: “Peace at home, peace in the world.” His vision of equality and progress remains an inspiration, as does Türkiye’s proud history of being one of the first Muslim countries to grant women the right to vote in 1930 and dedicating a national holiday to children.
Turkish Hospitality and Culture
Every aspect of the event reflected Türkiye’s deep-rooted hospitality. Guests were greeted with Turkish coffee tasting, led by İsa Seymen from Ballstonian, who shared the history and art of coffee fortune-telling. We reminded everyone of the Turkish saying: “A cup of coffee is remembered for 40 years.” A simple cup of coffee symbolizes friendship and enduring connections.
The evening was brought to life by the Kardelen Turkish Folklore Dance Group, who engaged the audience with dynamic performances and even taught a few dance moves, creating an interactive and joyful atmosphere. Group SAS added even more energy to the night with live Turkish music, inviting everyone to sing and dance along.
Meze Restaurant treated our guests to a 12-dish feast, showcasing the diverse flavors of Turkish cuisine. Turkish tea, served in tulip-shaped glasses, added an extra touch of warmth and welcome, inviting guests to stay, linger, and connect.
Why Washington, DC?
During the event, I shared my thoughts on DC’s unique cultural identity:
“DC is synonymous with diversity. Here, cultures and communities come together, enriching each other through both tradition and innovation. Much like Türkiye, where East meets West, DC serves as a bridge—a city that welcomes people from all over the world to share their stories. Tonight, as we celebrate Turkish culture, we are also celebrating DC, a city that opens its arms to the world.”
Unforgettable Memories and Connections
As the evening came to a close, I addressed our guests with these words:
“This evening was about more than flavors. It was about sharing cultures, stories, and friendships. Whatever you’re holding—a cup of tea, a glass of rakı, or something else—let’s raise it to new connections and lasting memories.”
This event was an opportunity to highlight Washington, DC’s cultural richness while sharing the spirit of Turkish hospitality. We are proud to have brought a piece of Türkiye to DC, creating a memorable experience that we hope will be cherished for years to come.
